The cast includes Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani. The plot revolves around a group of Kerala women who are pushed into converting to Islam and joining the Islamic State.The film, marketed as a real story, is based on the Hindutva conspiracy theory of "love jihad" and erroneously claims that hundreds of Hindu women from Kerala have been converted to Islam and recruited into the Islamic State.
The Kerala Story was released in theatres on May 5, 2023. The film grossed ₹303.97 crore (US$38 million) globally, making it the ninth-highest-grossing Hindi film. It was strongly pushed by the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party, who used the film to campaign for Karnataka assembly elections. However, film critics gave it extremely scathing reviews, describing it as Islamophobic propaganda.The film has also experienced lengthy legal proceedings and protests, mainly in Kerala, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.
